Oct 29, 2008 – After being delayed for more than a month one of the most critically acclaimed shows ever to grace Asia finally comes to Singapore.

The show started off with a beatbox battle between two of the finalists for the 2nd National Beatbox Competition, and other acts from Asia.

Then just as the crowd was getting impatient, the lights were turned off, then it began.. an array of lights and stronger playing in the background got the crowd excited. After that, the fog machines were activated and a blue light welcomed Kanye to the stage. He performed the first song off of his current album, Good Morning.

He proceeded to bring the stadium down song after song, and when he got to ‘I Put On’ he extended it with what seems to be a freestyle treat for the Singaporean crowd.

EBay on a spending spree

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 6, 2008 – eBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) today announced two acquisitions that significantly extend the company’s leadership position in online payments and classifieds. In payments, the company is acquiring the U.S.-based online payments business Bill Me Later® for approximately $820 million in cash and approximately $125 million in outstanding options. In classifieds, the company has acquired Denmark’s leading online classifieds site dba.dk and vehicles site bilbasen.dk for approximately $390 million in cash.

The company also announced plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 10 percent, affecting about 1,000 employees in addition to several hundred temporary workers and the reduction of open positions. The global reduction is intended to simplify and streamline eBay’s organization, improve the company’s cost structure and strengthen the overall competitiveness of the company’s existing businesses. The reduction is expected to result in pretax restructuring charges of approximately $70 million to $80 million, with the charges predominantly recorded in the fourth quarter of 2008. Read more..

Last year Singapore’s Defense Science and Technology Agency offered up 1 million sing dollars to anyone who can build a robot that can operate autonomously in urban conditions. Singapore has always been vigilant and it realizes that even a small country can be a prime target for terrorism or even an invasion from another country. Twenty-eight teams comprising more than 170 individuals from five countries registered and now only 6 teams are left.

The finals will take place tomorrow, event details are as follows: (free admission and open to everyone)

Date: Sunday 21 September 2008

Venue: Republic Polytechnic

Time: 9:30 am

The robots will have to do several tasks like navigating through a building , going on an elevator, climbing up a flight of stairs, tagging or take out a few targets like dustbin and soldiers and leaving the building all without human intervention.

The Teams:

Team Azrobowar- build by 5 amateurs in their own time with their own money. This is one of the more interesting teams to watch since they funded themselves they only had about 8,000 dollars as their budget (other teams usually spent 200-300k on their robots). Sharp Shooter, their robot, weighs about 118kg and most parts were bough second-hand; the arm was scavenged from a dustbin about 10 yrs ago by a team member, and its design incorporates ordinary webcams, a game controller and a whelchair motor.

Spore comes to Singapore!

I slept at 4am today playing DoTa, then for some reason i still woke up at 9 am on a Sunday. I thought “hmm, there must be something important that I had to do.”  And then it hit me..  SPORE LAUNCH @ Funan Mall!!  I wasnt in a hurry, afterall the launch wasnt until 12 pm so I arrived at Funan at exactly 10:30 thinking that I’d be the first in line looking all geeky and excited to get my freebies. And then this is what I saw…

And then I said the gamers prayer.. “OMFG, I hope Im still part of the first 200 buyers to get extra swag.” So I went in line just playing PSP and listening to music to help pass the time when I noticed that everyone in queue had one thing I didn’t, they all pre-ordered the game! So I was like, ” nah, I’m sure I can buy at the booth.” So I waited a little longer and when the booth was finally in sight, just when I can breath in the smell of newly packaged games I saw that there was only a redemption booth, and that there was a separate line for those that didnt pre-order.  After that I bowed my head, not in a cool way like batman does, more like when Krusty the Clown after a bad show. I almost wanted to go home, but no I was already there and nothing was gonna stop me from creating my intergalactic spore army.. (plus I’ve already wasted 20 bucks on cab fare so might as well do something right?). And so I went on the other queue and purchased my “pre-order receipt.” Long story short I went straight home after eating a quick lunch at subway and now I have to finish this blog post coz the spore setup is done. :)

Last August 23, was world photowalk day organized by Scott Kelby and the National Association for Photoshop Professionals. I also wanted to sign up but the each photowalk was limited to 50 participants only. The reason I’m writing about it this late is because I just want to congratulate Suhaimi Abdullah, one of the participants in the Singapore photowalk because she won the grand prize  with this photo entitled break free.(check out what the grand prize winner gets here!)

The Singapore photowalk started at Chinatown and ended at the Verandah Cafe, Asian Civilisation Museum at Empress Place. I believe this is going to be an annual event from now on so be sure to sign up early next year, I know I will.

COMEX 2008 Experience

Being the blog noob that I am, I decided to write about how I’m going to write about COMEX today since, well, nothing interesting happened to me the other day. Well I finally finished writing my COMEX article and you can check it out along with all the pictures from the event at allvoices.com, its my first contribution to this new website that I heard from the new media expo that happened a few weeks ago and you guys should definitely check it out.

As for my impressions on the event, it was great, it exceeded the number of floors compared to previous events because the Singtel and Panasonic ( i think ) booked the ballrooms at level 2 which normally isnt part of IT shows. As usual a lot of Bravia sets are being sold, Brother printers with their great bargains are also selling like hotcakes, and I can see that theres a lot of buzz with regards to the Acer Aspire One Series for some reason. As for the iPhone 3G, it doesnt look like its a big hit in Singapore, compared to the U.S. at least. I really didnt think that Singtel marketed the product enough, I mean they gave out reservations and a few posters but other than that, no TV commercials, no giveaways, no events! At least in the Philippines there was even a launch party that counted down till midnight the day b4 the launch. I was also dissappointed because I didnt find any headphones from plantronics so I had to settle for the ones from China, I hope it works ok coz they’re pretty cheap.

If you wanna check out all my photos from the event visit my profile at allvoices here.

Today I’ll be checking out an IT event in Suntec City called COMEX. This is the third show of its kind for this year in Singapore and since this is my first year here I’m really excited everytime an event like this takes place. I’m not really looking to buy any gadgets except maybe a good USB headset, hopefully I can see a few from Plantronics. As for games, I think the only one thats of interest right now, at least for PCs, is the new SIMS expansion Apartment Life. I’m not even gonna look at the console games coz i still can’t afford a PS3. Well I guess thats it for my first ever post on this blog, I’ll try to cover as much as i can from all the showroom floors especially since I’m planning to submit a news article on this event to allvoices.com.
